Arshia Quoted on Google Acquisition of Motorola

On August 15, 2011, Arshia Tabrizi was quoted in a Globe and Mail Report on Business feature article analyzing the $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility by Google. Arshia emphasized the IP rationale for the acquisition. “It’s a huge deal,” said technology and intellectual property lawyer Arshia Tabrizi. “Everyone thought Google was dead in the water after their Nortel bid fell through. But it turns out they had a very nice plan B.” Arshia also elaborated on defensive patent strategy as a tool for facilitating Google's negotiation of cross-licensing deals. “This is by and large a defensive play,” Mr. Tabrizi said. “Now Google can look at cross-licensing, so when Apple comes after them they can say, ‘Well, you’re infringing on this, this and this.’ ” The full Globe and Mail article can be read here.
